My Journey with Wheat Stem Art... but Why Wheat?
It all began in the 1960s in my homeland of Egypt. As a teenager, my friends and I would cut, flatten, and glue wheat stalks onto certain areas of large religious pictures to use for holiday decoration. This would give them a fresh, vibrant look to hang for Christmas and major holidays, and by doing so, these images would be fully transformed, and proudly displayed on windows and balconies, surrounded by festive lights. The natural, reflective finish of the wheat added a unique, joyful touch, creating an even more cheerful atmosphere.
Now, as a retired grandpa with plenty of free time on hand, that cherished hobby from my youth resurfaced, and after many decades, I decided to rekindle my passion for this art form and share it with you, so I hope you find the same joy in it as I do.
But why wheat?
Whether you call it Wheat Stalks, Wheat Stems, or Wheat Straws, the name doesn't matter when it comes to the beauty and significance of this humble grain. Wheat has long played a vital role in supporting humanity with its nourishing food, yet the simple wheat stalk, often seen as just an agricultural byproduct, holds a rich cultural and artistic history.
For centuries, across different civilizations, these golden stems have transcended their utilitarian use to become symbols of life, fertility, and abundance. In ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, wheat was closely linked to goddesses of harvest and fertility. Its use in art was deeply embedded in the cultural and agricultural heritage of humanity. From architectural embellishments to intricate paintings, wheat stalks have found their way into countless forms of artistic expression.
Today, whether woven, braided, or simply arranged in bouquets and wreaths, dried wheat stems continue to carry this centuries-old legacy. They embody a timeless beauty and a powerful connection to the earth's bounty.
We could explore the history of wheat stalks endlessly, but I’ll leave that to you... all I’ll say is, "Thank you Lord for gifting us this beautiful and enduring creation, so we can live and revel in its splendor."
